The 12th edition of the premier cricket event has been pretty tough for South Africa. The team entered into the ICC World Cup 2019with three straight losses. Nonetheless, the Proteas skipper Faf du Plessis feels that revelation could possibly bring the squad closer.
Sitting at the bottom of the points table, Proteas felt a bit relaxed with their fourth match against the West Indies left abandoned. Both the teams got one point each when rain has marred the game. West Indies had won one match against while lost the second to in a tough fight.
However, South Africa earned its first point in the washed out clash against the the Caribbeans.
AB de Villiers’ news had no big impact over the team, said du Plessis
With three successive defeats in hand, the Proteas’ skipper seems to be a handful at present. And to add to this, de Villiers’ offer to come out of retirement seemed like another crisis. The matter came out last week and revealed that Villiers had offered the South African selectors to play in the .
On the eve of World Cup squad announcement, de Villiers offered the Proteas selectors to end his retirement period. However,
The revelation had a significant effect over de Villiers’ fans, and it was deemed to affect the team. But in the interaction, after the washed off Windies clash, the skipper Faf du Plessis cleared that it did not have any big impact on the team. In fact, he said that this might bring the team together and in their next match against New Zealand. He said that things were made clear with the selectors and the coach.
“We do feel like the news came into the camp and just went through the team. It didn’t have a big impact,” du Plessis told reporters.
“There was a discussion on clarity and making sure everyone knows whats going on. But stuff like that can give you direction and purpose, to focus on what lies ahead.
The squad was already picked. I spoke to the coach and the selectors the next day, and we all agreed it was too late to change the team,” he added.
We Don’t deserve to be anywhere close to the top of the table: du Plessis
After the Windies clash, now South Africa have five more chances and even less to qualify for the final four. The Proteas seemed to be hanging by a thread as their next clash is up against who have won all three matches.
On the other hand, the right-handed batsman Plessis feels that the team hasn’t performed their best. He said that the current performance of his team makes them do not deserve any place near the top at the points table.
“We’re in this position because we haven’t played our best cricket. We need individuals to stand up.”
“We don’t deserve to be anywhere close to the top of the table. SA need to start playing better cricket, more consistent, more solid cricket,” said the 34-years-old Proteas skipper.
Though, du Plessis’ words might get true if they don’t make a comeback in the game. With five games left ahead, they yet have a chance to make it to the top four.
However, the skipper also feels that the team is in the right state of mind, and the fire is still alive. He is hoping to have the joint contribution by players and give Kiwis their first defeat in the impending match of the World Cup 2019.
