WWE Superstars work harder than any other athlete in the world. They have to entertain the fans day in and day out and sometimes they fail to do things properly and end up getting injured. If the injury is minor then the Superstar will continue wrestling, otherwise, he or she will have to rest and return when the doctors clear them to wrestle.
In the past, many former WWE Superstars have pointed fingers at the management for not taking their injuries seriously and it has hurt the company in many ways. One of the most popular Superstars who spoke against the medical staff was CM Punk, who was later sued by Dr. Chris Amann. Since then, WWE has started taking measures to protect their Superstars from suffering injuries but if they still get injured, the company will allow them to rest and recover. Although, there are still some wrestlers who are injured but haven’t taken a break from wrestling.
Here are 3 WWE Superstars that aren’t wrestling due to injuries and 2 that are working despite the pain.
#5 Currently injured: Jinder Mahal
Jinder Mahal recently renewed his WWE contract but it seems like we aren’t going to see him in the ring again anytime soon. In a recent live event, Mahal injured his patellar tendon which caused him to take some time off from wrestling. He underwent surgery a few weeks ago and it went well for the former WWE Champion.
“On the mend. Ruptured my Patella Tendon in Denver Colorado June 15 in a match against @aliwwe.Happy to say surgery went well, and my knee was better than expected. This comeback is going to be legendary.”
While Mahal has said that his comeback is going to be ‘legendary’, it would be a surprise if he receives a big push after recovering from the injury. Most probably, Vince McMahon would make him chase the 24/7 Title or have another mid-card championship reign.
#4 Working whilst injured: Braun Strowman
Braun Strowman has been working with an injury for a while now. In 2018, it was reported that Strowman was having issues with his knees and it could have kept him from winning the Universal Championship at Crown Jewel last year. Later, WWE pulled him from the Royal Rumble match against Brock Lesnar, which indicated that the Monster Among Men was going to take a break from WWE.
A few weeks later, he injured his shoulder and underwent surgery. After returning to the ring, Strowman has been through some good action but it seems like he isn’t completely fit. Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter says that Strowman is suffering from a knee/leg injury and it is why he isn’t squashing his opponents in the ring like he usually does. Meltzer also said Strowman will continue working for WWE without having treatment for his injury.
#3 Currently injured: Lars Sullivan
Lars Sullivan’s main roster call-up was one of the most anticipated debut in WWE since he was announced as one of the four NXT stars who would be arriving on the main roster in 2018. Due to his muscular body, fans thought he would be booked as a monster by Vince McMahon. However, his main roster debut was delayed multiple times due to his mental health issues and when he made his presence felt on Raw after WrestleMania, he destroyed a retired Kurt Angle.
Sullivan left the perfect first impression but then, his momentum plunged. In 2011, he made several inappropriate comments against WWE (and it’s wrestlers) which were leaked to the internet in May. Suddenly, he became one of the most controversial Superstars in WWE. Fans thought Sullivan’s WWE career is over but Vince McMahon chose not to fire him and instead put a $100,000 fine on him. Later, The Freak got injured on SmackDown and it’s expected that he wouldn’t return before the next 6-9 months.
#2 Working whilst injured: Randy Orton
Randy Orton is one of the most popular Superstars in WWE. He has (apparently) started a feud with current WWE Champion Kofi Kingston and could be challenging him for the title soon. Orton’s last World Championship reign came back in 2017 when he beat Bray Wyatt at WrestleMania. Since then, The Viper hasn’t been used correctly by WWE but things could change now, as Orton defeated The New Day this week by pinning Kingston on SmackDown.
However, we may not see him taking many bumps in the ring because of his neck injury. Since Super ShowDown, Orton wasn’t seen in WWE, which indicated that he could be injured. While a recent report from Dave Meltzer confirms that Orton is indeed injured, this injury wouldn’t keep him away from the ring because his doctor has said that he doesn’t require surgery.
#1 Currently injured: Ruby Riott
After the unexpected breakup of The Riott Squad, things took a different turn for Ruby Riott as she injured both of her shoulders. Reports haven’t confirmed what caused this injury but it is expected to keep her out of action until the next few months. Recently, she underwent surgery on her right shoulder and things are looking much better for her."Raw Superstar Ruby Riott underwent successful surgery yesterday to repair a bilateral injury to her right shoulder, WWE.com can confirm.Riott will receive surgery for the same injury on her left shoulder at a later date." (Credits for the quotes)
These reports were from May 2019 and it’s possible that at the time of writing this article, Riott has gotten surgery for her left shoulder as well.
